Helping the Dyck family
A Mennonite family traveling from Mexico to Canada had a van wreck north of Austin on I-35 several months ago, resulting in one death and several injuries. They needed to replace items lost in the wreck: a vehicle, dentures, eyeglasses, clothing, shoes, bedding, kitchen utensils.
Hospital social workers said cash donations were best because the family could take very little with them across the
Canadian border.
Checks were being accepted made out to the Isaac Dyck Family Assistance Fund at the Scott & White Hospital Development Office, 2401 S. 31st St., Temple, TX 76508.

Theme: "Anabaptist Faith and American Democracy"
The forum will consist of a panel responding to Ted Grimsrud's paper,
"Anabaptist Faith and American Democracy," which appeared in the July
2004 issue of Mennonite Quarterly Review. Grimsrud suggests that
Mennonite thinking about the intersection of faith and politics is
shaped by three narratives: an "Anabaptist Story," focused on
nonviolence and compassionate service, a "Democracy Story," focused on
consensual political participation and open public discourse, and an
"Empire Story," focused on expansion, power, and military strength. The
thrust of Grimsrud's discussion is that the Anabaptist Story, while
clearly in opposition to the Empire Story, should be pursued in a way
that is more supportive of the Democracy Story than has often been the
case among Mennonites. He specifically challenges perspectives that he
characterizes as less friendly to full participation in the American
democratic process, including that of Stanley Hauerwas.
The moderator will provide a summary of Grimsrud's paper, and the
panelists will each present a prepared response. Grimsrud will present
his own comments on the responses, followed by a signifant amount of
time for general discussion. The panel is intended to respresent
several perspectives both within and related to the Anabaptist-Mennonite
tradition.
